What do you think about the swine flu vaccination? Will you go to your doc and get your shot?
I think it is (a) not necessary (as in my opinion all flue shots are superfluous) and (b) way to dangerous.
(a) because the flu viruses change constantly, the vaccine they produce only immunizes you against last year's virus and may be totally useless against this year's version of the virus.
(b) in Germany, the vaccine is produced with the addition of an agent that enhances the effectiveness of the serum. that makes production faster (they say ...) and a lot cheaper. Yet this agent does not only enhance the effectiveness of the stuff, but also enhances the probability and the severity of possible side effects.

Just an example of the weird way they argue: The German authorities recommend that especially pregnant women should get the vaccination. Yet the vaccine with the added agent was not clinically tested for pregnant women, because "such a test would be unethical". Well - if that's the case, isn't the vaccination or even the recommendation of it unethical as well?

Flu vaccination is no option for me, and especially with swine flu I'm particularly wary because it is so new and I think it's been blown totally out of proportion. Many more people have died from normal flu(s) than from this one, so why panic?

I've never been vaccinated and I never had a flu... so what... Every year I have one or two colds and that's it.

Furthermore I don't belong to any risk group, so no vaccination for me

There is another common misunderstanding, that keeps to set me up. A flu has NOTHING to do with a cold. It's just so that we use to call both in German a "Grippe" - most people who say they have a "Grippe" actually have an "grippalen Infekt" - vulgo a bad cold.
My dear colleague gets on my nerves every year when she "explains" to me that she did not have a cold since she takes flu shots. And if in spite of the vaccination she feels a cold coming she takes antibiotica and then all is well ...

Colds, by the way, have also nothing to do with temperature - not the temperature of the environment nor that of your feet ... a cold has to do with viruses and they couldn't care less about temperatures. And they don't give a damn when it comes to antibiotica, too!

Actually, those viruses are not even the cause for colds. Both, the cold and the viruses, are symptoms of a certain state of your body which makes your nose run and the viruses flourish.

I have told myself well over 20 years ago that I had had enough colds in my life, that I knew every symptom and that I certainly did not need to experience any of that ever again. Following the ideas of "Krankheit als Chance" I understood, that a cold has no "Chance" for me, bears no "Lernfeld" and is of absolutely no use to me. Consequently, I told myself, I will not take one anymore.

And, believe it or not, I have not had a cold ever since!

The only shots I know are the shots in my "Stammkneipe" (whatever this word in English is). Shots are little drinks, mixed together with different ingredients, sometimes colored in orange, green, red etc. They shoot you, if you drink to many. I always avoid them.

I am with you, Marada. Most people say they have a "Grippe" but only have a bad cold. A "Grippe" knocks you out. The last I remember was in the early ninetees and I was out of order for 3 weeks. Gosh, my doctor came once a day to give me some injections. My mother came with chicken soup to feed me. I was sleeping round the clock and only got up for the doctor, my mother and to go to the toilet.

I always refused any flue vaccination. My philosophy is: If I get a cold or a flue, I should think about my imune system. I visited a friend with a terrible cold about two weeks ago. Still I feel sane and have not any cold, coff, running nose.

I got my flu shot this year and felt terrible!

Oh, I'm sure dear Ellen, the shots in any pub are tastefuller!
